Martin Murray has been classed as a boxing hero on his return from Argentina, after facing WBC world champion Sergio Martinez in his own back yard. The new mayor of St Helens Andy Bowden invited Martin and family to the mayormaking ceremony in St Helens Town Hall, where he received a standing ovation. This event followed a call from St Helens Star readers to be given civic recognition after an amazing performance.

During the mayormaking dinner, new council leader Barrie Grunewald said of Murray:

“Let me say a very warm welcome to Martin Murray.

“Each and every person in St Helens should be rightly proud of you and your achievements so far – and, although you didn’t come home from Argentina with the title you deserved, you are a true champion and great asset to St Helens.”

Martin Murray was recently interviewed by Fox Sports to talk about his feelings regarding the outcome of his fight with Sergio Martinez. The interview takes place live on Fox Sports in the native language, but it includes a translator. In the video Martin talks about why he thought he won the fight, and why he doesn’t think he will get a rematch with Martinez. Looking forward to his next fight, Chavez Jr looks like a possible opponent but Murray is posed with the question about whether he would fight Chavez Jr in Mexico. Murray seemed unfazed by the possibility that if the fight went the distance he would likely get a similar outcome on the scorecards as with Sturm and Martinez.

The video has been split into 2 parts, both of which can be viewed from the navigation in the video. The video is hosted on the Fox Sports LA website, and it can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

I should probably start this post by saying that these are not the words/thoughts/opinions of Martin Murray or his team. They’re the opinion of an independent writer that’s followed Murray’s career since 2008. Last night I witnessed an incredible performance from Martin Murray against one of the top 10 ranked pound for pound fighters in the world, taking the fight to the champion in the lions den, but having the win taken away from him by the judges. I really feel for Murray on this as it’s the second time a fight has ended with a World Title fight has ended with a controversial decision in the scoring.

The fight started tentatively, as both fighters felt each other out in the first couple of rounds. Martinez had his hands low to try and entice Murray in and put on a big performance for his home crowd, but Murray fought smart and had a solid defence. Martinez threw a lot of shots but they all landed on the arms or gloves of Murray. In the third round Murray landed some telling body shots and a right hook to the head signalling to the champion that he wasn’t just here to make up the numbers.

In the next few rounds Martin really started to impose himself and the pressure started to show for Martinez, and the 40,000 strong crowd seemed subdued. He started complaining to the referee and at times seemed a bit unsteady on his legs as his low guard opened him up to the cleaner shots from Murray. In round 8 there was a big break through as Murray floored the champion with a straight right. Murray exercised great patience but kept applying the pressure despite an increase in work rate from Martinez. In round 10 Murray knocked down Martinez again, but it was wrongly ruled as a slip. Not only did the knockdown seem quite clear, but the slow unsteady way that Martinez got back to his feet clearly showed he was affected.

Round 11 was very close, with Martinez getting the better of the first half with a solid jab keeping the challenger at bay, but Murray ended strong. In true form for a champion, Martinez rallied for the final rounds and was the busier fighter. At the end of the final round Martinez jumped onto the ropes in celebration, but it looked like he wasn’t convinced of the win. I scored the bout 113-114 in favour of Murray even with the discounted knockdown in round 10, so I was truly gutted when the judges scorecards read 115-112 in favour of Martinez. Martin and his team all looked equally unimpressed by the scoring.

So despite this being Murray’s first professional loss, I think that his stocks have seriously increased after that performance. It’s clear from the reaction of thousands of fans on social media that they all felt Murray was the champion and deserved the win. This included many Argentinian Martinez fans, that conceded that Murray deserved the win. I really thought Murray had done enough, so even though I was proud of the performance I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth especially with a 3 point wide victory on the judges cards.

So what next? I’m sure many would like to see a rematch on neutral soil, but Martinez certainly won’t want that. Much like with the the Sturm fight, they will have all manor of excuses to avoid it. Martin’s performance has once again solidified that belief that Martin is a world class operator so it should open a lot of doors for him. There are also the intriguing domestic rivalries. Darren Barker offered his commiserations to Murray on Twitter immediately after the fight, and suggested that this may be the time to get their fight in the books. This is something the the British fans would be keen to see. There are also other interesting match ups overseas, so we will see that Murray’s promotional team decide over the coming months. Murray looked undamaged and wasn’t hurt at all during the Martinez fight, so there is potential that fans might not have to wait as long this time.

In a recent interview with Hatton Promotions’ Andrew Wake, Martin was asked about his recent appearance on Sky’s Ringside programme with Darren Barker. Despite being rivals, there is clearly some respect between the two, as we’ve seen before such as you can see in our post here from April 2012.

Martin however had considerably less respect for Matthew Macklin, who joined them via telephone from Marbella. There has been an ongoing saga between Murray and Macklin, and Murray seems to be running out of patience with him. When asked if Macklin got under his skin, Martin said:

“No he never got me going. To put it bluntly, he’s a tit isn’t he?”

Although some may find this disrespectful, you always know where you stand with Martin and he tells it as he sees it. Also featured in the video was the fact that Martin was already well under way with his training camp in preparation for the upcoming world title fight against Sergio Martinez, which is taking place in Argentina on the 27th April 2013.

Last week both Martin Murray and Darren Barker were on an episode of Ringside on Sky TV, being interviewed by Jonny Nelson and Adam Smith regarding their upcoming fights later this year (Martin against Sergio Martinez in April, and Barker against a yet unknown opponent in March). A 10 minute excerpt of the episode can be seen above when the other domestic rival, Matthew Macklin, phoned in from Marbella.

Although there was clearly respect between Murray and Barker, tensions rose with Macklin when the interview focused on who was the better fighter, as well as talking about domestic match ups between the and analysing their previous fights. Although Macklin said that there were “great fights to be made” domestically, he also seemed dismissive and talked about focusing on the US. He also pointed out that he has had a lot of domestic fights such as against Jamie Moore, again giving another indication that this was unlikely to happen.

Everyone remained calm, but things were clearly becoming heated. If a fight can be made amongst the trio, the platform is being built for a great night of boxing.
