In a recent video released by Hatton Promotions following the pre-fight press conference (click the image above to see the video), Martin Murray has admitted that he is nervous ahead of his Commonwealth title fight against Peter Mitrevski Jr, but states that he always is.
“I think everybody needs nerves, you need them when you’re fighting. Even when I’m not nervous I’ll try and make myself nervous because I know I fight better on nerves. I am nervous ahead of Friday, but I know it’s going to be all good.”
Not many fighters like to admit to pre-fight nerves, and this is something often talked about by trainer / commentator Teddy Atlas. He says that if a fighter says they’re not nervous before a fight, they’re either a liar or they need to go and see a psychiatrist to find out what’s wrong with them. If you’re too nervous before a fight then you can tighten up so you don’t fight as you normally would, and you can get “gassed” easily because that nervous energy and extra adrenaline can drain you physically. However, being a bit nervous can keep you sharp, and keep you aware of the dangers when fighting an opponent so you don’t walk in and get caught with silly shots.
In the video Martin also stated that his training had gone really well, and that is completely prepared for the fight and expects a KO win.
“I’ll be disappointed if it goes the full 12 rounds, but I’m prepared if it does.”
Martin Murray’s loyal supporters known as “Martin’s Barmy Army” are expected to be in full force again for the title fight at Bolton Arena:
“The support is brilliant. The Barmy Army as they call themselves will be out in full force on Friday. I can’t thank them enough for all the support they give me, and I’m really looking forward to putting a good show on for them.”
Peter Mitrevski Jr, who was also present at the press conference but remained uncharacteristically quiet, also expressed an air of confidence of the upcoming fight. His trainer also trained Australian pound for pound champion Kostya Tzyu, and perhaps will be looking for some of revenge after his fighter retired after 11 rounds against Ricky Hatton. Murray however was just relieved when he got the phone call confirming that he was allowed entry into the country!
The fight is on at 10pm on Sky Sports 1 tomorrow night, and there may still be some seating available at the Bolton Arena. Box Pro will also be adding live feedback to Martin’s Facebook page if you want to the know the result as it happens.
