Martin Murray vs Felix Sturm

Yesterday Martin Murray came face to face for the first time yesterday with his opponent the WBA Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm. Martin is scheduled to face Sturm in the ring on the 2nd of December in a bout for the WBA title.

This fight is a chance for Martin Murray to show the world how good a fighter he is and hopefully bring home the belt, it is also a dream come true for Sturm who has always wanted to fight at the SAP Arena in Germany.

“Ever since I saw Wladimir Klitschko fighting at the SAP-Arena, it was a personal dream for me to step inside the ring here as well. That dream will come true on December 2nd,” Sturm told the assembled press. “I had a bad night in my last fight against Matthew Macklin and I was rightfully criticized but that won’t happen again. I will keep my championship and deliver a spectacular finish.”

Felix Sturm is training to defend his title in his hometown of Cologne, Germany, for his eleventh time.

“My camp is going well as always. I have to lose five more kilograms but that won’t be that big of a problem. I will be ready come fight night.”

His trainer Fritz Sdunek added:

“Felix certainly wasn’t at his best against Macklin but that will change this time around. There is no doubt in my mind that he will still be champion after the bout.”

Sturm isn’t underestimating Murray as a fighter and was full of praise for the undefeated contender yesterday;

“Murray is tall and a determined fighter. I’m pretty good at dealing with bigger fighters; it makes it easier for me to attack. This could turn into a great, great fight.”

Martin wasn’t put off by Felix Sturms confidence and showed he was calm and commanding in his composure and with an unbeaten record Murray has a right to be confident.

Martin Murray Boxing Presser

“This is an amazing opportunity for me. Felix has been a great champion for a long time but on December 2nd, his reign will end. Everything will change.”

Murrays training camp are working hard to help Martin have all the skills to take on this formidable challenger and the British boxing fans are positive that Murray will win convincingly.

During the presser Sturm also hinted about potential unification bouts.

“There is nothing bigger than to unify the belts”, he said. “It might happen in the future. But the other champions have to agree, too. It seems like some of them think I could throw money around any way I like. That’s absurd. We will see what happens after I take care of business against Murray. I’m completely focused on him right now anyway.”

Although he would do better to concentrate on this fight against Murray than to look at future fights right now, as Murray has proven to be a tough and disiplined fighter with the skills to be a world champion. Murray is already rated 3rd by the WBA as a contender and has shown significant improvement with every fight. This looks like it is going to be an exciting fight and we can’t wait!

Martin Murray to fight Felix Sturm for World Title

Monday, September 19th, 2011

martin murray world title fight

It has been very quiet in the Martin Murray camp over the last month or so but behind the scenes Martins team have been working hard to secure a career changing fight for Martin Murray Middleweight Boxer. It seems his team have come up trumps with the exciting news that Martin will get a crack at a World title against Felix Sturm.

Martin is currently the Middleweight Commonwealth, British and WBA inter-continental undefeated champion with 23 professional fights. Having springboarded his career by winning the Middleweight prizefighter contest in 2008, Martin has proved his worth and progressed his career with some tough fights. However December the 2nd looks to bring his toughest fight yet!

Felix Sturm is the WBA Middleweight World champion who beat Matthew Macklin by a split decision in June this year. Martin Murrays fans, the ‘Barmy Army’ have been calling out for Martin to prove his worth against Macklin but getting this chance with Sturm is even better news for the St Helens boxer.

Martin is promoted by Hatton Promotions and if Murray wins this fight will he will be the first

World Title champion for Ricky Hattons promotion team.

Martin states:

“I have started an 11 week training camp at Oliver Harrison’s gym and come fight night I will be in the shape of my life.

“I have been ready for this chance for about nine months, but I seemed to slip under the radar because everybody talks about Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker as the main middleweights in Britain.”

The Barmy Army have been frustrated for months that UK middleweights such as Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker have been getting a lot of press as being the best hopes for the UK as anyone who has watched Martin Murray fight can see that he is an excellent boxer with skills, strength, discipline and a good game plan. He has a great team fronted by Oliver Harrison and he seems to improve with every fight and learn from every opponent taking victory against some great fighters.

Earlier this year Sturm gained a controversial points winner over Matthew Macklin, one of the Barmy army’s biggest rivals, however Martin Murray is confident that the officials will judge the fight professionaly and fairly. Martin is looking forward to the chance to go one better than Macklin and take the World Title.

“I watched Sturm’s defence against Macklin and made it a draw. When it is that close the champion on home soil usually gets the decision and there could be no real complaints.

“The WBA are a fantastic organisation and been very good to me so I will not be worrying about the scoring.

“Anyway, I am better fighter than Macklin and I will go one better than him in December.”

Felix Sturm WBA Champion

Murray, is often the underdog, and this fight will be no different, although he is ranked number 3 by the WBA after being undefeated in 23 fights, he is facing a world champion who is a great fighter. Sturms record is strong with only 2 losses in a 39 fight career and will be defending the world title he won off Javier Castillejo in April 2007 for the eleventh time.

Murray has the backing of the very vocal ‘Barmy Army’ who no doubt will travel to Germany to cheer him on to victory. Martin has been given a chance to show the world that he is a clever and disciplined boxer with the potential to out box even the best. So on on Friday 2nd December at the SAP Arena, Mannheim, Martin can show the world what St Helens and most of the UK have been shouting about for years – there is only one Martin Murray!

What’s next for Martin Murray?

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

After a big win on Saturday night, and a third title belt to his collection, many people are wondering what the future holds for Martin Murray. Murray, along with Joe Murray and Anthony Crolla signed new extended contracts with Hatton Promotions after the trio all celebrated wins at the weekend. Ricky said:

“I am delighted and honoured that the lads have put their future in my hands and I intend to repay them by steering them to world titles. Martin is getting close, Anthony’s chance should come inside 18 months and Joe is one of the best young talents in British boxing.”

Currently ranked 4th by the WBA, many expect this win to make him the main contender in the division. Having been calling out fellow rival domestic fighters Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker for a while, Murray is still waiting for his chance to fight them while Macklin fights Felix Sturm on Saturday and Barker is set to fight Sergio Martinez in October. Neil Marsh, Murray’s manager said:

“We think the WBA will make us number one contender after this fight. We have been offered final eliminators for the WBA but those fights don’t come off. Barker and Macklin won’t fight him because they see it as a step backward. Sky and the boxing world want the best fights and we want Macklin and Barker. If these fights can’t be made then the Paul Smith fight has to be made. We can’t keep Martin at this level now, we have got to move forward.”

Many have compared Paul Smith’s fighting style to Martin’s, and this could gel well in the ring for an exciting fight. Other options include a potential world title shot against WBA middleweight title holder Gennady Golovkin. Martin said:

“The British title has proved in the past what it does for people. It’s a platform to go onto bigger and better things and that shows the quality of the British fighter. Hopefully it can be my platform for me because we feel we’re ready.”

Ricky Hatton, who has a great track record for securing title fights may be able to set this fight up in the near future. A win against Golovkin would not only be the dream world title that Martin has been working towards, but then also a huge carrot on a stick for future fights with Barker or Macklin.

Murray crushes Blackwell in 5 rounds

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Martin Murray put on another great performance for his home crowd at Robin Park Arena, with a dominant win over Nick Blackwell to collect the British Middleweight title to his growing collection of belts. Although the fight went pretty much as predicted, Blackwell showed lots of promise and determination in the ring. He was clearly up for the fight, and came out with a lot of confidence in the first round throwing fast flashy combos, although most were absorbed on the arms of Murray’s tight defence. Murray showed a lot of respect, and landed clean jabs and body shots testing the defence of Blackwell.

In round 2, both fighters landed some head shots although Murray’s shots were clearly having an effect on Blackwell, while Murray seemed unfazed. Although bloodied, Blackwell responded instantly to the landed shots with fiery combos showing great determination but also his inexperience as he missed or simply hit the the arms of Murray.

In the following rounds, Murray remained consistent with his pressure but started throwing bigger shots. breaking down the resolve of Blackwell. Both fighters landed body shots, but Murray seemed invulnerable to the shots while Blackwell seemed to be hurt with every attack. At the end of the fourth round, Blackwell slumped onto his corner chair with a pained expression, and complained of difficulty breathing and suggesting that a rib might be broken; a likely outcome as this has happened to several of Martin’s opponents in the past. However, Blackwell continued on to a tough fifth round which he managed to survive but the writing was on the wall. His corner mercifully stopped the fight, as Blackwell would not have given up and risked further injury by carrying on.

Martin was delighted to have won the Lonsdale belt, a title that he had wanted ever since he first turned professional and fellow stable mate Jamie Moore won his Lonsdale belt. Martin commented that he felt completely in control of the fight, and thought that the fight may have ended sooner. Although he had a lot of respect for Nick for taking the fight, he believed it was too soon in his professional career and he wasn’t ready for such an undertaking. Promoter Ricky Hatton suggested that Martin was completely dominant and didn’t appear to get out of first gear, simply doing what was needed to win the fight.

On winning the fight and taking home the Lonsdale belt, Martin said:

“I’m made up, I’ve always wanted this belt since I was an amateur. I always said that when I won it I would dedicate it to my first amateur trainer John Chisnall [manager of the Glass boxing gym in St Helens and very influential in Martin's life], who died in 2005, so this one’s for John.”

When asked what is next for Martin, Ricky Hatton said:

“I think Martin is becoming a really well rounded professional now. There’s a 3 way domestic rivalry at the moment with Barker, Macklin and now Martin catching them up now. Martin is 28 years old, he’s in the peak of his career, and I think he’s going to be the man of the division.”

Hatton promotions have been very successful in setting up good fights for Martin, and he’s now won 3 titles with them so hopefully the big fights that he’s after won’t be too far away.

Tonight: Murray vs Blackwell

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Martin Murray and Joe Murray feature in the latest Hatton promotions poster

Tonight is finally the night, as Robin Park Arena prepares to host the main event of Martin Murray vs Nick Blackwell for the British Middleweight title. Both fighters looked good on the scales at the weigh in yesterday at the Park Inn Hotel in St Helens, although Martin was noticeably heavier and seemed much more relaxed. Unsurprising really as this is a huge undertaking for Blackwell (who has only had 8 professional fights) and was met with a boisterous, pro Murray crowd. A video of the weighin can be seen below courtesy of Hatton Promotions:

http://www.hattonboxing.com/tv/news/martin-murray-v-nick-blackwell-weigh-in

Martin has consistently repeated that he is not taking this fight lightly, and sees it as the biggest fight of his career so far. He refuses to look past this fight as a loss at this stage of his career would be a big step back. He says:

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Nick for taking the fight, and as a fighter.”

Most believe that Nick is scared (understandably), but this fear will make him a sharp and potentially dangerous fighter. Nick of course is adament that this is his big chance, his destiny, and that he will use this fight as a platform to bigger and better things.

The fight is taking place at Robin Park Sports Centre in Wigan (Loire Drive, Wigan, WN5 0UH) and also features a good undercard of Hatton fighters including fellow ST Helens fighter Craig Lyon and Olympian Joe Murray. For those that don’t have tickets yet but wish to attend, General Admission is £35.00, Ringside £55.00, VIP Ringside £75.00. The doors open at 18.00, with the first fight starting at 18.15. For those not lucky enough to get tickets, the fight is also being shown live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 10.15pm.

DebRA – Working for a life of free pain

DebRA logo

Martin Murray has been working with registered charity DebRA (www.DebRA.org.uk), and is very keen to get as much exposure for them as possible. DebRA work on behalf of people in the UK with the genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). Although it’s a very rare condition, patients suffer from skin and internal body lining blisters. The slightest knock or rub can be very painful and open wounds. Because the disease is genetic, it is not contagious (cannot be caught) and is passed on from parents to children. EB is likely to affect 1 in 17,000 live births and it is estimated that there are currently 5,000 people with the condition in the UK.

If you want to get involved, there are lots of ways that you can help. Many supporters of the charity simply like to leave a donation, which you can do from their donation page. Alternatively you can take part in or help organise the many fundraising events that they organise throughout the year. These include charity fun runs, charity dinners, sporting events and much more.

Check out the DebRA events calendar to find out when the next event is taking place.
